Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch square or round baking pan.
- In a mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
- In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients.
- Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped apples gently to avoid crushing them.
Baking
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on top (if desired) and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out mostly clean.
Serving
- Let the cake cool for a few minutes before slicing.
- Serve warm with ice cream, or drizzled with caramel for extra indulgence.
Notes
For a crackly top, sprinkle turbinado sugar before baking. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil. This cake can be made ahead and kept at room temperature for a day or refrigerated for up to 4 days.
